Castor Design

Andrew: I've specified a lot of furniture in my career. Most of it is fine. Castor is not fine — it's right. Founded in Toronto in 2008 by Adam Vollick and Brian Richer, they make furniture, lighting, and objects with the same approach across all of it: honest materials, considered form, nothing that doesn't need to be there. We put their pieces into the Shopify Montreal office at Linebox. Their lighting has been in other projects too. When you're designing for a company that actually cares about the space people work in, you don't reach for the catalogue. You call Castor.

Ashlyn: Dad has explained Castor to me more than once. I get it now — it's not about any one product, it's about a way of making things. Everything they do has the same feeling: like someone thought about it for a long time before they made it. That's rarer than it sounds. I don't have a strong opinion on the specific chair vs. the specific lamp. I have a strong opinion on the studio.

Chloe: I like that they make things in Toronto. I like that you can tell how something is made just by looking at it. Dad took me to see some of their pieces once and I spent a long time looking at the joints. That's the thing about well-made objects — the details are interesting. You want to look closer, not less.
